FinScope www.finscope.co.za is best described as a flexible market survey instrument designed by the non-profit FinMark Trust, which measures the effective needs, access to, and actual use of financial services, along with how people manage their money and hence what drives financial behaviour. FinScope is also a global measurement tool that provides comparable and reliable data on the financial landscape in African countries and globally.

Since the launch of the first full FinScope survey in 2003, survey data which has now been collected for a number of Southern, Western and Eastern Africa as well as in Southern Asia countries has been used by private and public sector participants for a number of purposes including:

• as a global measurement tool which provides financial service providers and regional integration initiatives with comparable and reliable data on the financial landscape including: usage and availability of banking, credit, savings and insurance products; attitudes and perception about insurance and savings; reasons for having products; quality of life and access to services and amenities; education and financial literacy levels; technology and cell phone usage
• as a tool to facilitate and monitor dynamic market developments and highlight gaps in the market
• to provide vital information on segmentation which is critical for product development, approval and roll-out. This data has enabled inter alia banks and insurers to develop customer segmentation models which have resulted in the development of products aimed at serving the low income segment
• as a reliable source of cross-country financial sector data which is used for the development of regional expansion strategies
• to provide a complete overview of retail financial markets which establishes a credible basis for pro-access policy intervention
• as a powerful instrument to support advocacy in favour of advancing access to financial services
